Apply for the 2019 MJ Bear Fellowship

We are pleased to announce that applications are open for the 2019 MJ Bear Fellowship. ONA has received a generous gift from Microsoft News to expand the program and provide more rising stars in digital journalism under 30 with recognition, coaching and opportunities to showcase their work.

In 2019, we will select six fellows from around the world who are beginning to drive innovation in digital news.

The fellowship provides:

  1. Speaking opportunity at ONA’s annual conference. Fellows earn recognition at digital journalism’s largest event and participate in a panel discussion to share their work. The fellowship covers registration, travel and accommodations for ONA19, Sept. 12–14, in New Orleans.
  2. Three tailored coaching sessions. Based on the projects that fellows are working on and the skills they are looking to build, ONA works with industry leaders to design custom coaching sessions for the group. Past sessions have covered topics such as pitching projects, stories and oneself; career advancement in a changing world; audience engagement; marketing and entrepreneurship.
  3. ONA membership, with three year’s dues paid in full.
  4. Additional opportunities to showcase work and expertise. During their fellowship year, fellows share insights from their projects and career journeys on ONA’s website. These insights become evergreen resources for the digital journalism community.

The fellowship is open to working journalists under 30 who are leading a digital journalism project. The deadline to apply is July 11 at 11:59 p.m. EDT. Learn more about the application requirements.

The program was established in 2011 in honor of MJ Bear, one of ONA’s founding members and a digital journalism pioneer. Through generous gifts from Bear, her colleagues and family, the program has supported 24 digital journalists in their career development.
