Opportunities for investigative journalists and independent media outlets in 2019

1. EUROPEAN CROSS-BORDER GRANTS

The aim of Journalismfund.eu is to promote quality journalism in Europe by giving journalists the chance to carry out journalistic research projects.

Journalismfund.eu will support professional journalists, who have good ideas for cross-border investigations and for research on European affairs. The stories must be relevant for European target groups.

The project should be one that, in principle, could not be realised in this format within the remit of regular journalism – a project that can include cross-border research, networking between colleagues, established and innovative investigative methods and that is at the same time original, innovative and intensive.

Journalismfund.eu supports costs related to journalistic research for all media. This can include travel, translation, access to pay-databases or simply time to research. We do not support fixed costs such as office costs, investments such as cameras or computers or production costs.

2. MONEY TRAIL GRANTS

Money Trail is a collaborative project between highly regarded journalism and training organisations – Journalismfund.eu, Finance Uncovered, Free Press Unlimited – and Oxfam Novib.

In Money Trail, Journalismfund.eu offers working grants for mixed teams of African, Asian and European journalists to investigate cross-border illicit financial flows, tax abuse and corruption in Africa, Asia and Europe. Grants are awarded to journalists solely by Journalismfund.eu, with no input or oversight at any stage from the consortium as a whole.

Only intercontinental journalist teams consisting of at least one African, one Asian and/or one European journalist are eligible to apply. Each team must consist of journalists from at least two continents.

In order to be eligible for application, the teams have to ensure that their story will be published in at least two continents. Therefore, during the application procedure they will be asked to upload letters of intent for publication from media organisations in at least two continents.

3. INVESTIGATE EUROPE

Journalismfund.eu makes it possible for journalists to investigate stories thoroughly and independently, by operating as a firewall between donors and journalists. In that respect, we provide Investigate Europe with administrative and financial support.

Investigate Europe is a team of nine experienced journalists from eight European countries who research as a multinational team. They share, merge and crosscheck facts – tackling the usual national bias. They point out responsible transnational structures and actors in issues of European-wide relevance to make it possible to hold those in power accountable.
