MacDowell began accepting applications on Feb. 15 for the fall 2021 residency period. The deadline for applications is April 15, 2021, but the residency season is being extended. Please review the special application notice at this link. Like many residency programs, MacDowell temporarily closed its program due to the corona virus pandemic. Upon reopening in October, MacDowell remained committed to providing time and space to those artists whose residencies were cancelled or postponed due to our closure in a safe and socially-distanced way. We have been operating a scaled-back program that has artist, staff, and community safety and health as the number-one priority.

About 300 persons in seven disciplines are awarded fellowships each year and the sole criterion for acceptance is artistic excellence. There are no residency fees. Travel grants as well as need-based stipends are available to open the residency experience to the broadest possible community of artists. Artists with professional standing in their fields, as well as emerging artists, are eligible to apply. MacDowell encourages artists from all backgrounds and all countries in the following disciplines: architecture, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts.
